En effet, \u00e0 partir de 1853, Maubeuge est reli\u00e9e par voie ferr\u00e9e \u00e0 Charleroi et \u00e0 la Lorraine, consolidant ainsi l&rsquo;essor \u00e9conomique du bassin de la Sambre notamment en ce qui concerne l&rsquo;approvisionnement de minerais.&nbsp; Rapidement, la population du faubourg augmente gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un afflux de main d&rsquo;\u0153uvre. Sous-le-Bois devient une v\u00e9ritable \u00ab\u00a0ville dans la ville\u00a0\u00bb ayant besoin de sa propre paroisse. Le chantier de l&rsquo;\u00e9glise d\u00e9bute en 1863 notamment gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&rsquo;implication financi\u00e8re des habitants du quartier.<br>L&rsquo;industriel Ren\u00e9 Hamoir se rapproche alors de l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur belge Vogel et de l&rsquo;architecte valenciennois Dutouquet. <br>La mise en \u0153uvre des plans est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par des ouvriers m\u00e9tallurgistes du quartier et les mat\u00e9riaux proviennent, l\u00e0 encore, des usines de Sous-le-Bois. L&rsquo;\u00e9glise est finalement consacr\u00e9e en 1866 par l&rsquo;Abb\u00e9 Hannoye.<\/p>\n<p>Un contraste inattendu marque cet \u00e9difice : la fa\u00e7ade, enduite dans les ann\u00e9es 1960 et repeinte en couleur brique, se confronte \u00e0 la charpente m\u00e9tallique soutenant la toiture. <\/p>\n<p>En effet, toute la structure repose sur des colonnes en fonte, d\u00e9cor\u00e9e par des d\u00e9tails d&rsquo;une grande finesse. S&rsquo;inspirant d&rsquo;une \u00e9glise situ\u00e9e \u00e0 Seraing en Belgique, Vogel utilise la fonte pour r\u00e9aliser cette structure. Mat\u00e9riau habituellement utilis\u00e9 pour les charpentes d&rsquo;usines, les halls ou encore les gares, il poss\u00e8de l&rsquo;avantage d&rsquo;\u00eatre extr\u00eamement mall\u00e9able et apporte une v\u00e9ritable libert\u00e9 cr\u00e9ative \u00e0 Vogel. <\/p>\n<p>Cette charpente spectaculaire, inhabituelle pour un \u00e9difice religieux, est unique dans la r\u00e9gion.&nbsp; L&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur applique les principes de l&rsquo;architecte Eug\u00e8ne Viollet-le-Duc : le recours aux nouveaux mat\u00e9riaux dans la r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tation du r\u00e9pertoire gothique.
