Ce nom leur est donn\u00e9 en raison de la couleur de leurs v\u00eatements.<\/p><p>Dans cette institution \u00e0 vocation charitable, les S\u0153urs noires se vouent dans un premier temps au soulagement des malades. A partir du XVIIe si\u00e8cle, elles s&rsquo;attachent \u00e0 participer \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9ducation des jeunes filles sans fortune.<\/p><p>En parall\u00e8le des travaux que Vauban entreprend dans les ann\u00e9es 1680, travaux visant \u00e0 faire de Maubeuge une place forte, il initie \u00e9galement la construction d&rsquo;un h\u00f4pital militaire. Ce dernier englobe le couvent. La fa\u00e7ade que l&rsquo;on aper\u00e7oit encore aujourd&rsquo;hui date de cette \u00e9poque.<\/p><p>L&rsquo;architecture de la chapelle, rigoureusement sym\u00e9trique, vise \u00e0 rappeler symboliquement l&rsquo;ordre divin. De style baroque, elle est con\u00e7ue de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter un v\u00e9ritable dynamisme : des jeux de volumes, tant\u00f4t concaves puis convexes ; l&rsquo;alternance des mat\u00e9riaux locaux utilis\u00e9s &#8211; pierre bleue et brique rouge ; deux niveaux d&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9vation pos\u00e9s en trompe l&rsquo;\u0153il.<\/p><p>Durant les deux guerres mondiales, la chapelle sert de d\u00e9p\u00f4t militaire. Elle accueille ensuite une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de musique, puis la premi\u00e8re biblioth\u00e8que municipale durant 32 ans ainsi que le temple protestant.
