Rapidement remarqu\u00e9 au Salon, il obtient plusieurs prix, ce qui lui permet de beaucoup voyager. Il se rend en Turquie, en Egypte, en Alg\u00e9rie et en Tunisie et apprend l\u2019arabe \u00e0 l\u2019Ecole des langues orientales. Ces nombreux voyages sont des sources d\u2019inspiration pour ses tableaux, qu\u2019il r\u00e9alise parfois sur place ou de retour dans son atelier.<\/p><p>Il fait plusieurs voyages en \u00c9gypte et r\u00e9alise cette toile \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de l\u2019un d\u2019eux. Le tableau, inachev\u00e9, a peut-\u00eatre \u00e9t\u00e9 peint sur place. En effet, le format tr\u00e8s petit du tableau, l\u2019aspect inachev\u00e9 et l\u2019absence de signature plaide pour la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019une \u00e9tude \u00ab sur le motif \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire en ext\u00e9rieur. Le \u00ab cachet \u00bb en bas \u00e0 droite de la toile mentionne le nom de l\u2019artiste et ses dates de vie. Il a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 appos\u00e9 apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de l\u2019artiste : Paul Leroy a gard\u00e9 cette toile dans son atelier toute sa vie. Tel un souvenir de voyage, elle n\u2019\u00e9tait pas destin\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00eatre vendue, et a \u00e9t\u00e9 offerte au mus\u00e9e de Maubeuge par le fils de l\u2019artiste.<\/p><p>L\u2019artiste a pu peindre \u00ab sur le motif \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire en ext\u00e9rieur, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019invention de la peinture en tube. Cette invention permet de simplifier le transport des tubes mais \u00e9galement les m\u00e9langes. Auparavant, l\u2019artiste faisait lui-m\u00eame le m\u00e9lange de son liant (de l\u2019huile en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral) et des pigments pour obtenir la couleur qu\u2019il souhaitait. Avec cette invention, les artistes deviennent de vrais nomades et les marchands imaginent des chevalets portatifs qui ressemblent parfois \u00e0 de simples valises !
